God forbid that I should go to any heaven where there are no horses.

Babe, past away on New Year's Eve.  Babe, a 22 yr old Belgian Mare who was originally from an Amish farm was on her way to a kill auction when she got detoured to Easy Street.  After a full Vet check-up it was found that she had a heart mummer, and was permanently lame due to the hard work she endured.  Unbeknownst to us, Babe arrived pregnant and gave birth to Pilgrim, Thanksgiving Day in 2006.  Babe's spirit will live on forever in Pilgrim who has been adopted to become a Therapeutic Riding Horse.  We will never, ever forget you, Babe.

Horse Thoughts

Please look at me
I'm big and beautiful
Yes a bit worn
But I've lived life
Had 13 foals
Plowed the fields
Worked very hard
Too hard
Please look at me beyond
Beyond my overworked legs
Beyond my 'broken' suspensors
Beyond my limping
Please really look at me
Look into my eyes
You will see my soul
A soul who loves life
A soul who is content
A soul who has found a home

 I am not in pain
Look into my eyes
Really look at me
And see me as I am now
Not what you think I am
As you look into my eyes
My soul sees into yours
I understand you
I know you need me
As I need you
Let me live life now
In my own way
I have much to give
I am still Queen of the Barnyard
The majestic and proud Belgian
Please look at me
I am Babe

Babe - She is the queen and will forever be the queen.

Horse Thoughts

The weekend of Sept 27/28, 2008 was very exciting for us as we took Tonka (Tee) to a Kenny Harlow unbroke horse training clinic. The attached pic is of Nina riding Tee beside Kenny on the 2nd day of the clinic.  It was beautiful to watch how Kenny trained Tee so that Tee trusted him throughout the entire process and enjoyed it too!

I just wanted to share with you all. If you've never seen Kenny work he is really amazing.  Tee (3 yrs old) had never had a saddle or bridle on him and after just over an hour on the first day Kenny was on Tee's back riding him about the ring.  And nothing was rushed or any harsh type training.  It was all really quite amazing to watch as he used only gentle methods where the horse accepts Kenny as the leader and trusts him.  It will be fun to share his methods with the rest of the horses here.

Horse Thoughts

The tragedy of Eight Belles, the first filly in the Kentucky Derby since 1999, being put down on the track after her second-place finish, saddened all of us horse lovers.  Eight Belles broke two ankles, and was euthanized.  It is never easy to have a horse put down, but it makes it even harder to witness one with such beauty and strength.  She will forever be missed and may always be a reminder of the dark side of horse racing.

"There was no way to save her," said her trainer, Larry Jones. "She went out in glory," Jones said. "She went out a champion..."

In a gesture of compassion for the filly, Easy Street Rescue received a $27 donation won by a horse lover for her bet on Eight Belles.  I want thank that horse lover and share her thoughts with you.  She wrote, "Dear Easy Street Rescue, These are my winnings from my wager on Eight Bells in the Kentucky Derby.  Please accept these in her memory."

Thank you again for passing on Eight Belles winnings onto other horses in need.  You are truly an angel of horses
