Update on Seizures from Easy Street Rescue

Horse Thoughts

Today (Aug 13 2008) was a very somber day as I watched 17 horses being seized from a former riding stable by the Humane Society and local law enforcement. Most were extremely emaciated and dehydrated, with varying degrees of hoof and skin problems.  Four of those horses came here to Easy Street Rescue where they will begin a new and better chapter in their lives.

Bee is a small brown horse in the worst condition of the ones received here at Easy Street.  Bee is severely emaciated, has a nasal infection, and extremely swaybacked. She is in her 20's and it is unknown if she will fully recover from her poor treatment. We are hopeful that she will find a new home as a companion horse.

Boo is an Arabian gelding approximately 8-10 years old. Although Boo is very emaciated and dehydrated, he is in his prime years and we are hopeful he will have a full recovery and go on to have a long wonderful life with a loving new owner.

Lady is a middle aged Quarter horse who is emaciated, dehydrated and showing a bit of tenderness in walking.

Molly is a 30+ Draft cross (Percheron/Morgan) who faired a little better than her three barn partners. Molly and another draft horse Polly were left out on pasture that had some grass, while the rest of the horses were being given bread and donuts. Some horses hardly received anything to eat while others got most of what little was given out.

Currently the court is considering charges of animal cruelty against the former stable owners.  Whatever happens in the case three of the horses are guaranteed to have a better life as they were surrendered to Easy Street. Molly's future may end up being determined by the courts.  In the meantime, these four sweet horses will be kept segregated for three weeks from the other horses at Easy Street to ensure no communicable diseases, they will be examined and treated by a Veterinarian, hoofs treated by a Farrier, skin treatments, and will receive food and love to continue their path to health. All of these costs add up and your donations are sincerely appreciated. In addition to monetary support we are in need of persons to help us with additional lighting in the barn, fencing support, basic barn maintenance, and those with lots of love in their hearts to brush these sweet horses. They love attention!

We accept PayPal online or checks via mail. Our expenses are high right now and the horses sincerely need your support. We are a not-for-profit organization registered in New York. If you would like to visit the horses please call or email to arrange a set time/date to ensure we are available.

(Updates)

All the horses seized from a Rensselaer County stable and brought to Easy Street were immediately paid a visit by a farrier and a veterinarian.  They were all quarantined together in a nice pasture that has a wooded area for shade, a small creek running through it for water, and access to the barn for daily grain and supplements as well as to use as a run-in shelter.

Updates on all of the horses’ progress and pictures will be frequent.

Notice the changes in the rescued horses after a short time on Easy Street (shown below) from their arrival here (shown top right).  Their faces are filling in, ribs are not showing as much, coats have improved, and spirits are elevated.

Laurie is an experienced horse handler who patiently taught Boo some commands in the round pen on her first visit to Easy Street.

Boo was originally adopted by Laurie and her husband Tom.

Boo went with Laurie and Tom to live in the company of her two other Arabians.

Due to personal issues, not related to Boo, he was returned to Easy Street in April of 2009.

Boo returned in fantastic condition, and was immediately adopted again.

New pictures can be found on the Adopted Page.

Lady waiting for her turn to see the farrier

The veterinarian made a preliminary diagnosis that the bit of tenderness Lady shows in walking may be due to arthritis.  Lady has a considerably large amount of scars that our Vet believes may be from a past run-in with barbed wire and the arthritis may be in connection to these scars.  Whilst there was a lot of interest in Lady by potential adopters she had a home on Easy Street for as long as it took for her stiffness and discomfort to subside.

Molly and Polly together again on Easy Street

Molly and Polly, mother and daughter who were together for 30+ years until being separated during the rescue are together again on Easy Street.  Molly and Polly are guaranteed to have a better life as it was determined by the court that they both be surrendered to Easy Street Rescue.

Molly and Polly have found a new foster home.  Due to the advanced ages of the mares, and the need to ensure they are never separated, Molly and Polly will not be available for Adoption and will live permanently in an Easy Street Rescue Foster Home.

They live in a place that is just right for them.

Some horses on Easy Street will never be available for adoption,

but would love to live in a foster home.

Please join the Easy Street family as a Foster Home.
