Man arrested for animal cruelty charges in Canajoharie for starving two horses.

Easy Street Horse Rescue

Horses seized by Sheriff, brought to Easy Street 12-12-09. Below is the Sheriff's Press Release on two horses that were seized this past Saturday and the owner arrested. Both of the horses have been brought to Easy Street Rescue.

Both the Vet and Farrier have examined them and found them in extremely poor condition with o...
ne horse rating 1.5 and the other 2.5 on the Henneke Body Conditioning Scale (where 1 is very poor, 5 is ideal and 9 is obese). Our farrier was extremely upset with their condition and wrote a letter for the DA for the court date in January. Here is her letter below:

" I have over 26 years as a Farrier and hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from SUNY Cobleskill. These horses are emaciated. Both horses show 11 ribs and no flesh over their respective tail heads. Muscle development is lacking under the tails, inside thighs, and on the outside of hind legs. The necks on both horses lack muscle, and the hair coat is rough and lacking density. There is a flat plain on both sides of the back on both horses. The plains are in both cases located above the ribs under the top of the shoulder (withers), where horses hold muscle and fat (the saddle position). I could not feel any fat on the horses. The bay colored male horse is the thinner of the pair, showing 11 ribs at the bottom of the belly. The black colored mare is also far too thin to make it through the winter in her present condition. These horses score poorly as they are both showing neglect. The body condition score on the black mare is a 2 and on the bay gelding 1 ½ to 2.

These horses have been in need of hoof care for well over 6 months. The gelding has a full length vertical crack in the toe of his left front hoof which, in my expert opinion, has been there over one year. I base this assumption on my experience as a horse-shoer. This crack needs extra care and proper shoeing for more than a year to allow it to fully grow out, as hooves grow on average ¼ inch in 4 weeks.

It is my feeling that these horses have not been given food, grain and/or high quality hay in proper amounts to maintain their health and well being, and because of this could easily succumb to starvation if not given continued proper care." - Jeri Murray

Press Release: December 12, 2009

Man arrested for animal cruelty charges in Canajoharie for starving two horses.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office arrested a man in Canajoharie for having two horses on property he owns on Old Sharon Road.  The horses have been left out since May 2009 in a pasture with no shelter.

Deputies were called to the area after reports of horses out by the roadway.  Police located the property at 710 Old Sharon Road where two horses were near a barn.

The owners of the property and horses arrived shortly thereafter.  The horses appeared emaciated, and scruffy.  The horses ribs, and hip, spine and shoulder bones were very visible.  Both horse had fluid discharge coming from it's nose and eyes.  The horse owner showed deputies a four acre pasture, seperate from the barn area, surrounded by an electric fence where he had the horses.
No fresh water was available.  A water tub located in the center of the pasture had seven inches of snow in it.  No grass was available to the horses in the pasture.

Deputies assisted the horse owners in providing fresh hay for the animals which was located in the barn.  The owner reported no one had been to the pasture to feed the animals since `12/10/09.  The horse owner, Todd M. Folts 36 yo was arrested and charged with Cruelty to Animals.  The Easy Street Horse Rescue INC
http://www.easystreetrescue.org/News.html responded for the two horses.  Shelter, Food and Water will be provided as well as medical attention for the horses.  Donations are being sought to assist with the cost of boarding and vet care for the two horses.  They have a long road of recovery ahead of them.  Holiday adoption is available and individuals can donate their money or time in caring for abused and neglected horses at the Easy Street Horse Rescue.
