Beloved and majestic Thor passed into Horse Heaven

Easy Street Rescue is sad to report the death of Thor, who died on July 16th, 2010, one year after a partial recovery from an injury to his right rear leg.

Today our beloved and majestic Thor passed into Horse Heaven. He was truly an amazing horse and touched the lives of many. We thought his leg had gotten to a place where it was no longer bothering him, nor with an open wound when suddenly it became inflamed, literally overnight, and swelled to 4x the normal. He was obviously in severe distress and going downhill so the decision was made to take the pain from him. He lived almost pain-free this past year, prior to this week, enjoying green pastures and the company of his buddy, Lelan, a full shire standing over 18 hands. Together they galloped and enjoyed mutual grooming.

This morning I said goodbye to Thor giving him one last kiss on the nose. You will forever be in my heart and soul, Thor. You were so special that I cannot put into words how great you were. Only those who were fortunate enough to meet you know. We all love you. Babe is waiting for you now in Horse Heaven and I know we will meet again one day.

Thank you Kathy for giving him this last year. You and Kristen meant so much to Thor and you gave him happiness and contentment. Our hearts feel your pain and we understand your loss.

Nina Bellinger

Webmaster's note: Thor cast a large shadow of the one or the other over every one that visited as well as knew of him. I am one of the many that truly loved Thor, and will miss him without end... Paul Bellinger

Montgomery County SPCA brought us a rescue this week: a huge Belgian gelding we are now calling Thor.

Thor is breathtakingly beautiful and a very gentle giant. What also took our breath away is the horrendous wound on his right rear leg with the leg swollen to 3x its normal size.  The wound itself is several months old, gross and loaded with maggots. The 'story' is a logging chain wrapped around his leg. Pix of Thor upon arrival are posted below.  We give our many thanks to Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputy K.P. Collins (pictured below) for stepping in to rescue Thor, and for the SPCA for bringing Thor to Easy Street Rescue.

Thor is under a veterinarians care for his right rear leg. He is receiving a series of intravenous injections and direct treatment to the leg. We are optimistic that this will bring the swelling to about 50%, and close the open wound. Sadly, we were told by our vet, and a consulting vet, not to expect his leg to return to normal. The injury has been there to long, and to much proud flesh has developed. Fortunately, Thor is not lame and walks, trots, and gallops.

Thor has completed one part of his medical treatments - his IV drips. These were 3 days on, 3 days off, and 3 days on of a 30 minute IV drip to help break down the cellulites that had formed in his leg. Thank goodness he was a very good boy for those 30 minutes as we had to stand on the picnic table to get up high enough to administer the medication!

The 2nd part of his treatment is an IV injection given twice the first and second weeks, and then weekly thereafter. He still has three weeks of those to receive. This medication is to help boost his immune system.

The 3rd part of treatments is treating the leg directly. Every 2-3 days his leg is massaged and covered with a mixture of dmso/furazin/epson salts; and then wrapped. He loves the massaging and the application of the medications, but he gets very antsy when the bandages need to be cut off. But other than that he is a very good boy.

A super huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone who helped raise the funds needed for Thor's medical expenses! The goal was originally $2100, but the actual amount comes in at $1950 and we've met the goal. Thor received the last of his intravenous injections in September.

Thor is one really amazing horse!

We continue to be dependent on your support to help horses in need of rescue.
